The work of the architect Eckhard Schulze-Fielitz, who was born in Stettin in 1929 is important for discourses on contemporary architecture. After his first work, which was influenced by Modernism, Schulze-Fielitz began to explore the possibilities of mass production, modular spatial systems, urban growth and its social effects. He joined the GEAM Group, which Yona Friedman belonged to, in 1961. His explorations led him to housing construction and the examination of ecological sustainability, global distribution processes and ‘gentle’ housing construction concepts for Africa and the Middle East. He published the results of this work in Stadtsysteme/Urban Systems, which appeared in 1971.
