Cracks, potholes, crumbling pavement, repair work both professional and half-hearted, gum stains and graffiti, make it evident that this is a sidewalk that has long been neglected, and has consequently fallen into ruin. This leads the viewer to wonder about the people who used this sidewalk daily, who lived and worked here (New York), and one soon starts to see evidence of their presence and their personalities.
