At the start of the 1930s Gotthard Schuh was one of the leading representatives of modern photographic journalism in Switzerland. His interests were above all in subjectively influenced photography. With his sensuous and atmospheric imagery he turned himself into a master of poetic realism and left his mark on the younger generations of photographers after World War II. Robert Frank, to name just one, received groundbreaking impulses from the work of his friend. Schuh is among the great unknowns in European photography. Now for the first time an extensive tribute to his work is presented in an international context. The presentation includes, among other things, his most important works of the 1930s, Schuh´s sensitive studies of human encounters, the relationship between Franz Schuh and Robert Frank, and Schuh´s loving look at ladies and landscapes. In addition to frequently reproduced images, many previously unknown photographs are published for the first time.
