Through Pop Art’s explosion onto the international scene and the impulse to museicize what has been mistakenly deemed ‘popular culture’, the complex relationship between production, exhibition, and Art collecting has become an immediate debate. Starting with the question, ‘What is a contemporary Art collection?’, the MACBA has selected some of the more than 1000 pieces from the Onnasch collection for display in an attempt to understand the importance and transcendence of the work that German collector Reinhard Onnasch has done for contemporary European Art. The show includes the works of artists such as Oldenburg, Rauschenberg, Brecht, Stella, Lüpertz, Kienholz, Motherwell, Serra, Kelly, Twombly, Weiner, Haacke, Segal, Christo, and Hofmann, among others. The catalogue, in addition to images of the works on display, includes a study by Boris Groys and another by Petra Kipphoff.
