Ornament & Versprechen
The term “Memphis“ descripes a group of designers and architects who created furniture, textiles, glass and ceramics, spearheaded by Ettore Sottsass on the Milan furniture fair in 1981. The movement was commercially successful due to high production rates. The “Memphis-Look“ became accessible to a wider audience through the appartement of Karl Lagerfeld that was entirely furnished in Memphis-products.
About 110 lamps, textiles, tableware and furniture are reproduced here in coloured illustrations, accompanied by short introductions on the artists.
