The years 1965-1975 were a period of extraordinary turbulence and transformation in Japan. Rapid economic growth saw profound changes in the country’s social, political and urban structure, and an explosion of artistic creativity. Japanese photography also underwent changes since the post-war years, exemplified by the nine photographers selected here. No longer focused on the nation or collective, artists like Taiji Arita, Eikoh Hosoe, Daido Moriyama, Masatoshi Naito, Hajime Sawatari, Issei Suda, Yoshihiro Tatsuki, Shuji Terayama and Katsumi Watanabe sought to portray the individual within society.
