Italo Calvino va néixer en 1923 a Santiago de les Hortes (Cuba). Als dos anys la família va tornar a Itàlia per a instal·lar-se en Sant Rem (Ligúria). Va publicar la seva primera novel·la animat per Cesare Pavese, qui li va introduir en la prestigiosa editorial Einaudi. Allí exerciria una important labor com a editor.
