The identity of African art in relation sith european aesthetics.

"When I look back, to the twelve years since my first trip to Africa, and to the satisfying experiences during the time devoted to this study, I find that the outstanding result is the positive answer to the question I asked myself in my first close contact with the art of this continent:does modern painting exist in Africa?" This research work is presented in four chapters. The first chapter is devoted to the study of the history of African painting previous to the 20th century. In the second chapter an analysis has been made of traditional art, and the social and cultural atmosphere in which artist dwell. The analysis of the interrelation of European colonialism of Africa and African plastic arts is the subject of the third chapter. The fourth chapter discusses the fundamental question of this work: whether we can accept or not the existence of a new African art, detached from the traditional canons."
