The book, "Picasso Caballos" ("Picasso Horses") offers a detailed review of the horse iconography found in Picassos work, based on a study of eighty-five works the artist produced between 1889, when he was still a child, up until 1972, just a few months before his death. Published in separate Spanish and English editions, the book includes essays by the following experts: Dominique Dupuis-Labbé, curator at the Musée Picasso in Paris; Laurence Madeline, from the Musée dOrsay; and the expert in the history of the horse, Jean-Louis Gouraud. Readers will also come across a brief selection of texts by Picasso, a select bibliography and contents pages. This review also features graphic support in the form of another sixty works by different artists. The horse is a fundamental and constant reference in Picassos work. In the works of his youth, the artist recorded the habitual presence of this animal in the urban environment that made up his own surroundings. Later on, the horse became a long-lasting iconographic symbol in Picassos personal language, forming part of his imaginary world and being used on the canvas as a powerful expressive vehicle. Picasso depicted the horse in different ways and with different techniques (oils, pastels, drawings, prints, ceramics, collages, textiles ...), all of which are brought together within the pages of this book.
"Picasso Caballos" has been published in order to mark the staging of an exhibition of the same name that will be taking place at the Picasso Museum in Malaga as of May 2010.
