El cancionero de la sablonara is a highly selective manuscript collection of 75 Spanish polyphonic art-songs, composed primarily at the Spanish court during the first quarter of the 17th century. Named after its scribe and compiler, Claudio de la Sablonara (the chief copyist of the Spanish Royal Chapel), it was evidently compiled at the request of the Count of Bavaria, Wolfgang Wilhelm, during his visit to the Madrid court in 1624-5, and constitutes one of the relatively few extant relics of the court´s prodigious musical repertoire. The majority of the songs, comprising genuine Spanish genres and set for two, three and four voices, were written by leading composers of the time, including Capitan, Gabriel Duaz, Juan de Palomares and Juan Pujol, and the texts by prominent literary figures of the Golden Age, such as Lope de Vega. This critical edition offers a complete transcription of both the poetry and the music. Introductory chapters review the scholarship and research to date on the manuscript; they include a systematic summary of the poetry and an overall stylistic evaluation of the most salient musical features. This book is also available in an English edition. Contents: Part 1 Historical, literary and musical aspects: the Cancionero - introduction, the manuscript, the composers; the poetry - style and content, versification; the music - introduction, stylistic features and sectional delineation, performing aspects. Part 2 Textual transcriptions. Part 3 Musical transcriptions.
