From 2010 to 2013, German photographer Göran Gnaudschun created a
rich social document about the daily activities at Berlin s Alexanderplatz,
a major public square that retained its socialist character after reunification.
The square, where drug use and drinking is the norm, is home to marginalized,
stranded individuals, runaways, homeless, attention-seekers and show-offs.
Even if tenderness and violence make for a volatile blend, the Alexanderplatz
offers a sense of safety and security. Gnaudschun, a professor at the University
of Potsdam, spent years on site gradually establishing relationships that
enabled him to conduct personal interviews and make intimate portraits and
situational photographs As the artist sums up his three year project, An
artist project, yes, but also an important document of Berlin street culture
in the early 21st-century .
