Since 1994, the Van Gogh Museum and the Huygens Institute in The Hague have been working on a new scholarly edition of the complete correspondence. The result is this six-volume, slipcased compendium: a comprehensive, up-to-date, and extensively annotated edition of van Gogh’s letters as he actually wrote them, without textual refinements, retranslations, amendments, or excised passages.
For the first time, all the works to which van Gogh refers are shown alongside the letters: not only the paintings and drawings on which he himself was working but also the works of art by others that he mentioned. In this way, the rich visual world of van Gogh is brought to life. 9000 color illustrations.
