The State Hermitage presents the sculpture CLASP created in 2010 by Antony Gormley, a renowned modern British sculptor-monumentalist. Antony Gormley was born in London in 1950. He earned an academic degree in the field of archeology, anthropology and history of art at Trinity College, Cambridge, and then traveled. After 3 years of traveling in India Gormley returned to London where he resumed his studies at Central School of Art, Goldsmiths College and Slade School of Art. Among Antony Gormely’s most famous works are a 20-meter Angel of the North in the suburbs of Gateshead, Great Britain, and Event Horizon consisting of 31 figures on New York roofs and roadways. In 1994 Gormley received a prestigious British Turner Prize and South Bank Prize in 1999. Gormley’s works were exhibited at Venetian Biennale and 8th Document, Germany. By presenting the sculpture of Antony Gormley the Hermitage follows the principle of a joint exposition of both works of modern and classic art that has been widely applied in the museum practice. For example, in 2003 the Hermitage exhibited video works by Bill Viola and Shirin Neshat that were placed in the permanent exposition using traditional items from the museum collections that complement and develop the theme of video works. The sculpture CLASP is presented with the support of JT International and in cooperation with the British Council.
