Vrouwen in de vormgeving in Nederland 1880-1940 is the commercial edition of Marjan Groot´s doctorate on the achievements and the professional reputation of women designers in Dutch decorative arts and design between 1880 and 1940. This recent book on women in applied art and design in the Netherlands between 1880 and 1940 is a reference work of women designers and gender constructions in the Netherlands on the basis of largely unpublished sources.
Marjan Groot (1959) studied Cultural Anthropology and Art History in Amsterdam and Leiden, and the Academy for Art and Design in Amsterdam. She received a doctorate from the University of Leiden. At this University she teaches on the history of European decorative art and industrial design and its relations with non-western cultures. She is currently head of the BA and MA programs of the School of Art History.
Her field of interest concerns all forms of decorative art and design. In her research she searches to combine historical knowledge of decorative arts and design with contemporary viewpoints and frameworks. Recent research and publications deal with political and religious conflicts between western and non-western cultures through artifacts; with relations between art, design, nature and biotechnology; and with the blurring of boundaries between decorative arts, folk art and gender constructions.
