Accompanying a major UK touring exhibition which includes approximately 60 works by Turner, Constable and their contemporaries from the Tate collection, this richly illustrated book explores the development, variety and innovation of the landscape oil sketch in British art. Appearing in the 1770s, it flourished during the first two decades of the nineteenth century, only to effectively disappear, save for Constable´s persistence, during the 1820s.
