An informative and elegantly illustrated introduction to Chinese ink paintings and calligraphies from the 20th and 21st centuries.This book aims to explore the innovative contributions of individual masters whose artistic work has helped shape the image of modern China, revealing how their works reflect the political climates and important events of the times in which they were created. It examines the relationship between modern Chinese painting and the modern Western art scene, with reference to the artistic exchanges between Picasso and Zhang Daqian. Displays the beauty and skill of Chinese ink painting through a selection of highlights from the British Museum´s collection, including hanging scrolls, hand scrolls, large-scale paintings and album leaves.
Published to coincide with an exhibition at the British Museum from 3 May – 2 September 2012.
