The City Amplified

Recently awarded the Ouborg Prize for 2009, Justin Bennett is a unique sound artist that repeatedly surprises with unusual compositions comprised of everyday sounds of the city. The artist leads his audience into an auditory world which is often unheard in the daily hustle and bustle of a city: muffled shouting behind closed doors, the gurgle of water deep underground and the harmonious sounds of the air-ventilation systems from underground parking garages. In this publication, realised as part of the prize, a wide-ranging collection of works by Bennett are explored, accompanied by texts, images, and an almost three meter long, fold-out leporello that documents various aspects of the artist at work.
