Towards the end of the 1950s, Austrian artist Gunter Brüs began his career by creating paintings of a style closely related to Abstract Expressionism. However, in 1964 he joined up with "the Theatre of Orgies and Mysteries" (with Hermann Nitsch and Otto Mühl) and began to execute individual performances centered on ritual and social catharsis. In these performances, of which we still have models, photographs and films, his body became the material and means to condemn the social, political and religious taboos that permeate Western society. In the 1970s he began to produce drawings of sinister and, in some cases, neurotic subject matter. His first series, done in black and white, were followed by others of drawings in color related to literary illustration, symbolism and the aesthetics of cruelty. In all cases, his body was the protagonist. Since the 1980s Brus has focused on the creation of "painting-poems," literature, and stage design. In this book the most unique and outstanding features of Brüs´ works; their radical and consequential nature, as well as the expressive complexity and the imaginative and reflexive variety; are made patently clear as the basis of his artistic career.
