This work aims to provide a reliable and readable translation of the writings of the Roman land surveyors. Although these works were first collected toegther probably in the 5th century AD, this is the first attempt to produce a translation into English of all the most significant texts and to present them in a single volume, along with a Latin text, glossary, and selection of line drawings from the manuscripts. A historical introduction and commentary establish the context of ancient surveying and its historical importance in terms of law, society, and economy, and also the relationship of the texts to the identification of Roman field systems and settlements.
