Wirth-Nesher focuses on the textual work of literature itself through a series of close examinations of eight urban novels from the 20th century from Europe and USA: Singer´s ghettoed Warsaw, Oz´s wartorn Jerusalem, Dreiser´s and Ellisons socially and racially separated New York, James´s Paris and Roth´s New York, and Joyce´s Dublin and Woolf´s London.
